Die Plazenta bildet sich während der Schwangerschaft in der Gebärmutter der Mutter. Die Plazenta besteht aus Zellen der Mutter und aus Zellen des ungeborenen Kindes. Die Plazenta versorgt über die Nabelschnur das ungeborene Kind mit Nährstoffen und Sauerstoff.
Nach der Geburt des Kindes muss sich die Plazenta von der Gebärmutter lösen. Wenn sich die Plazenta nicht von selbst löst, sind unter Umständen medizinische Maßnahmen notwendig.
